Ohio DOE’s International Education Advisory Committee is pleased to announce five regional summits for educators, business and community leaders interested in seeing that Ohio students are prepared for the global economy. The agenda for each event is being planned by local hosts to feature engaging speakers and opportunities for networking.Turkey Study Tour for Teachers Four area high school teachers will travel to Turkey this summer as guests of the Turkish Cultural Foundation. Congratulations to: Cathy Jeremiah - Parma City School District Kerry Parker - Keystone Local School District Cindy Richards - Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools Rita Stroempl - Cleveland Metropolitan School District The teachers learned about Turkey at the Cleveland Council's Turkish Culture Professional Development Workshop in April. They will tour Turkey from June 28 - July 9th and this Fall will collaborate with CCWA to present programs about what they have learned about Turkey, its people, and their cultures. UNA-USA 2009 National High School Essay Contest
The Cleveland Council on World Affairs recently became home for the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the UNA-USA. UNA-USA sponsors a High School Essay Contest each year and students are encouraged to participate. Information can be found at www.unausa.org/essay2009. Panel Discussion about Korea at Midpark High
On May 14, Ambassador Jack Pritchard of the Korea Economic Institute and representatives from the State Department and the Korean Embassy participated in a panel discussion with students from Berea's Midpark High School about Korea and its economic issues. Superintendents, Teachers, Students Meet with Educators from Saudi Arabia Fifteen local superintendents from Northeast Ohio school districts will meet with 11 ministers of education from Saudi Arabia on the morning of May 20th at the Education Service Center of Cuyahoga County. The visitors are interested in learning about U.S. public school education. The educators will participate in small group sessions to discuss public education, funding, curriculum, and parental and community involvement in schools. Afterward, the Saudi educators will meet with local teachers and students to discuss school life, extracurricular activities, and other topics of interest to youth. Kids, Poetry, and Soccer CCWA's Education and International Visitor Departments collaborated with the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, Cleveland SCORES and Wal-Mart on a workshop for kids that focused on poetry-writing and soccer. Ten kids participated in weekly programs at Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center to improve literacy skills, team-building, and exercise. They wrote a poem about soccer that they performed at the opening ceremonies for the July 3 - 6 Continental Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament. On May 20, CCWA participated in a workshop to inform the kids about the countries participating in the games, do fun cultural activities and translate the poems into Spanish, Hindi and Russian. ** Cooperative Agreement ** Photographs and video are taken during programs and events for promotional, marketing, and historical purposes. Participants and attendees agree to release rights to photos taken at the Council's educational programs. |
