What is Model United Nations?
The Model United Nations (MUN) is an authentic simulation of the debates and deliberations of U.N. bodies, in which high school students represent ambassadors of member states and debate current issues on the U.N.’s agenda. We look forward to hosting approximately 800 students from 36 High Schools. We are proud to sponsor two sessions this year, both will be held at Cleveland State University. This program catapults students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation; students prepare resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters, and navigate the UN's rules of procedure to understand complex global concerns like the environment, refugees, AIDS, and peacekeeping.

On March 17, 1945, 16 high schools, each represented by six delegates and a technical advisor, convened at the Western Reserve University under the direction of the Cleveland Council of World Affairs (CCWA) to hold the inaugural “Student Conference on International Affairs.” The students represented Allied nations in an Assembly of Nations which was a precursor to the Model United Nations assemblies held after World War II. Sixty years later, CCWA continues to host the conference. (Photo: Fairview High School students caucusing at the 2002 conference)

What occurs at a conference?
Before a conference is held, students research their country and its perspective on various global issues and policies related to committee topic(s). These policies are then included in a “position paper” prepared by the delegates. This preparation allows delegates to effectively debate and negotiate solutions to the committee topic(s). Students prepare “resolutions”- recommendations based on the issues debated. These resolutions are then voted on and those that pass become “UN Mandate.”
