About Us

Founded in 1923 to promote world peace, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs is Northeast Ohio’s most prominent organization that provides the public with greater understanding and personal engagement in international relations and global issues.

The Council hosts more than 30 events each year, ranging from major lectures by political, business and academic leaders who shape the world to free discussions with national and regional experts. Council events are open to the general public and provide an opportunity for open discussion. Our major lectures reach a broad audience through broadcasts on 90.3 WCPN/NPR.

Speakers at our major lectures have included:

* Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations
* Lech Walesa, Former President of Poland and head of Solidarity
* Sen.George Mitchell, negotiator of the Peace Accords for Ireland
* Thomas R. Pickering, Boeing VP for International Affairs and Former Under Secretary of State
* Robert Gallucci, Dean of the Foreign Service School at Georgetown University and expert on nuclear proliferation
* Thomas Friedman, Pulitzer Prize winning foreign affairs correspondent for The New York Times

The Council’s programs for students and educators challenge over 2000 area students each year, encourage students to discover and understand complex global concerns and offer a context for examining issues from multiple perspectives. The Council’s portfolio of school programs excites students, enhances their knowledge about the world and serves a wide range of schools.

Our International Visitor Program hosts more than 300 emerging leaders each year who come from around the world to meet and exchange ideas with their professional counterparts in Northeast Ohio.

The Council’s special programs include off-the-record briefings for community leaders and activities for young professionals.
